CYCLING PATHS AND ROADS TO DISCOVER ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF MONTREAL
for a one day escape |
[ FRANÇAIS ] The Aboriginal community of Kahnawake is one of eleven First Nations in the country with, among others, the Huron, Iroquois, Cree and Algonquin.
An event not to miss the Kahnawake Pow Wow every year in July
To go to Kahnawake by bike, it takes between three and four hours from Montreal, and between two and three hours from Longueuil. If you come from there, you must first have to borrow la Voie Maritime ou La Riveraine until the city of St. Catherine.
From St. Catherine, we are heading towards Saint-Constant. The Indian Reserve begins just on the other side of the railway, on 132 West. The 132 is a dangerous road with a lot of cars, and people drive fast. You must be careful and be well equipped.
From the railway, you will still have to travel about five kilometers on the 132 to the village, which lies below the Mercier Bridge. You can then take the Old Malone Highway and River Road to the bike path that will lead you along the Kateri Tekakwitha island, which is accessible by a small bridge over the Mohawk River.
Here lies the shrine of Kateri Tekakwitha. The grave of the saint is exhibited in the sanctuary of the same name. The place is quiet, peaceful and invites to contemplation.
